Happy New year all! After a horrendous December, and plenty of snow, the
Hollis Historical Society is back to their regular meetings and planning
out an exciting mix of events for 2009. While the ice and snow came, the Society was busy with a list of improvements to the Wheeler House - the installation of the new fire alarm system as well as major roof repairs further protecting the historic items on display and archives within the building. |

Geraldine "Geri" Dickerman passes: The Hollis Community will greatly miss Geri Dickerman, wife of Russ Dickerman for almost 45 years. Together the Dickermans were instrumental in saving the lost Town of Monson. They have been the caretakers of the property since 1998. They warded off a major development of the property, finally having the Society for the Protection of NH Forests take possession to keep the historic site, now a legacy of the Dickermans for all to enjoy. When and if you visit Monson this year, think of planting a flower, pull some weeds or fill the birdfeeders in memory of Geri.
Artifacts, Photos - Needed: Planning a re-decoration of the Always Ready Engine House in honor of it's 150th Anniversary in 2009, the Society is looking for any artifacts, photos, etc. that are Fire and Police Department related that you may be able to loan us to display at the Engine house for the year.
NEWS FROM THE WHEELER HOUSE (from Martha Davis)
As I write this, the snow is falling, there is no school today in Hollis, and the Wheeler House will not be open this afternoon. This has happened before since our new year began, and it is still January. But, Spring will Come! It has been quiet here, but good things have been happening. We have had two portraits that were in our collection archivally framed, and they will be hanging in our dining room soon. Come in and see them.
We received two items from the Leominster Historical Commision. that were discovered in some of their papers. One was a booklet entitled "Constitution and By-Laws of Aurora Lodge, No. 49, I.O.O.F. - Hollis N.H." Dated 1924. the other item was a flyer used by Daniel W. Hayden to promote his candidacy for senator at the state level in 1910.
We though you all would appreciate seeing the flyer and learning a little history about one of our prominent citizens from the past, we we ar4e including it in this newsletter with a brief introduction to Daniel Hayden taken from "Where the Past Has Been Preserved" and the "Hollis Family Album", Enjoy!
